Android O is expected to bring in features that aid developers while providing much awaited features and benefits to the users. Speculation of Android O seems to be promising and hopefully it gets more into the box. Getting down to some of the major features included in Android O.
Features of Android :
Background Limits :
Android O betters RAM usage enabling longer battery life. This has been major lime light throughout the previous versions, but Android O successfully hits home by successfully bringing a much long lasting battery life. It does so by limiting the background services which wouldn’t be run anymore if the app halts and isn’t active or in running state. There will be restriction on the declaration of implicit broadcast receivers in manifest with few exceptions such as BOOT COMPLETED, LOCALE_CHANGED, USB_DEVICE_ATTACHED whereas explicit broadcast receivers would be still delivered.
Notification Channels :
Developers would now be able to group notifications of same category. They could customize notifications and group them together.Users can have control over notification such as blocking, adding light or vibration. Furthermore, one can set in the privacy levels for particular category of notifications required. Also, developers can use notification channels to categorize notifications accordingly.
Picture in Picture :
Users would now be able to play videos and simultaneously switch to other apps without the video being paused as it currently does. The experience can be related to functionality of YouTube when a user presses the back button while watching a video. To put it in a better perspective, this feature would enable multi-window functionality on a single screen voiding out the hassles to switch out the hassles.
AutoFill Framework :
This would probably turn out to be a boon to the users. It’s tedious and waxing to fill lengthy form repeatedly. This feature cuts to the chase without one having to go through the entire ordeal again. Android O would be introducing auto fill saving one the painful efforts and increased frustration. While it certainly makes it a lot quicker, it also takes away the probability of errors that might otherwise result from manually having to type it repeatedly. This would require authentication before user’s data can be auto filled in forms.
Autofill Option can be enabled/disabled in Settings > Apps & Notifications > Default apps > Autofill app.
Adaptive Icons :
Android O would come up with adaptive launcher icons with variety of shapes displayed for different device models. For one it could be squircle and for the other it can be circular. Each device OEM provides a mask, which the system then uses to render all icons with the same shape. The new launcher icons are also used in shortcuts, the Settings app, sharing dialogs, and the overview screen.
